How to delete top section of webpage?

Hi all, I am trying to create a webpage using Express and cannot delete the top section (or apply my theme to it) when I use the "Create from scratch" option. If I create sections below that one, I can delete them with no problem. What is the deal here? I have spent way too much time on what should be a trivial task. Thank you for any help you can provide!

Welcome, and thanks for reaching out — I totally get how frustrating this must be.

You're absolutely right — in Adobe Express, the top (hero) section of a webpage created "from scratch" can’t be deleted. It's part of the default layout structure.

That said, here’s what you can do:

You can fully customize the section: change or remove the image, title, subtitle, or button.
To make it more minimal, leave the text fields empty and set a plain background.
Unfortunately, themes don’t apply fully to the top section, but you can manually adjust colors and fonts to match the rest of your page.

I know it's not ideal, but with a few tweaks, you can make it feel seamless. Let me know if you need help editing it!

How would I set a plain background or change the background colors of the two boxes?

Webpages handle backgrounds a bit differently from regular Express designs, so here's how each part works.

For a plain background across the whole page, that's controlled by the page Theme, not set element by element. Two options:

Fastest: in the Themes panel, pick a built-in theme that already uses a solid background color.
Custom color: → click Create new theme at the top of the Themes panel → in the theme editor, set the page background to the exact color you want. You can adjust title and text colors from here too.

That gives you one clean, solid background for the whole page.

For the two boxes, it depends on what they actually are. If they're the two halves of a Split Layout block, the webpage editor doesn't give each half its own fill color the way the design editor does. The background of each half is whatever you place in it, so the way to get a solid color into a box is to drop a plain solid-color image into that half and set it as the background.
