Image scaling issue within frame bounding boxes

Hey everyone

There has recently been a significant change to the behaviour of image frames in Adobe Express, which is having a massive impact on our entire team’s workflows and making our custom templates pretty much unusable.
The problem is this: when an image is inserted into a shaped frame (e.g. a diamond), the image can no longer be scaled down within the frame to a size smaller than the outer (invisible) rectangular bounding box of the shape. The programme now aggressively forces the image to fill these invisible corners – even though these areas will be cropped or masked out by the diamond shape in the final design anyway.

This new ‘fill logic’ is setting our team back quite a bit. Essentially, we either need the old behaviour restored or, at the very least, a toggle in the frame settings to disable this forced filling of the bounding box. Is there a reason why this feature has been changed?

Thanks in advance!

I can no longer resize frames added from the Express library to a custom ratio. When I add a design element like a frame onto the canvas, it lets me resize, but it is locked at one dimension. For example, you can no longer turn a rectangle frame into a square or vice versa. This is insanely frustrating and makes those elements worthless. I tried holding alt, holding shift, none of the classic resizing shortcuts work anymore. Is this a bug? Why did this change when it used to work so naturally?

Yes, so many features have gotten worse since I was using express a few months ago. I can no longer resize frames to a custom ratio. When I add a design element like a frame onto the canvas, it lets me resize, but has it locked at one dimension. For example, you can no longer turn a rectangle frame into a square or vice versa. This is insanely frustrating and makes those elements worthless. I tried holding alt, holding shift, none of the classic resizing shortcuts work anymore. Is this a bug?

Hey @heather_9118 - I merged your comments to this thread as it’s something the team is looking into. I don’t have a timeline, but I have an eye on it and will give an update once I get one from the engineering side!

Thanks,

Rose

Hi @heather_9118,

I’ve passed it along to the team, but I want to make sure I'm looking at exactly the same thing you are, because the behavior of frames can differ depending on how they're being used.

Would you be able to share a short screen recording of what you're doing? Specifically: adding the frame from the library, then trying to resize it to the custom ratio (e.g. rectangle → square) and showing where it locks. If a recording won't upload here, DM me and I'll give you somewhere to send it.

A couple of things that'll help me line it up:

  • Where exactly are you adding the frame from - the Elements panel (Design assets), or somewhere else?
  • When you say it's locked at one dimension, does it keep the aspect ratio no matter which handle you drag, or does one direction work and the other doesn't?

Thank you so much!

Rose

Hi @markus_3713! wanted to let you know this is being looked at. The change you've described in how images behave inside shaped frames is something I've raised with the team, and they're actively discussing it. I don't have a resolution or timeline to give you yet, but it's not sitting unseen.

I'll update this thread as soon as I have more to share.
