Question

Lost my option to group / ungroup on a video with captions

Hi everyone,

Please let me know if you are aware of a work-around or fix on the following issue? The topic is working with the group/ungroup feature on videos in Adobe Express.

I am working on a short video inside of Adobe Express (free version), which includes captions generated by AE. When I first open up my video inside AE, and ensure that the option for showing layers and show layer timing are on, AE offers me a way to "group" and to "ungroup" the layers. The layers are defined by AE as each individual caption in the video. Since I have 26 captions, AE gives me 26 layers. When I select the "group" option which appears, the layers are thyen grouped together, and I can 'bulk adjust' changes such as the caption font type, caption background and other features, which is wonderful.

However, if I start clicking other things, I often (but not always) lose the option to group and ungroup layers, and can't seem to find an easy way to get it back.

See the attached picture, where I selected a caption box and right clicked to see the options, but the group/ungroup feature was not among them. However, it was there before.

If you have any thoughts or suggestions as to how to bring the group/ungroup option back in this kind of case, I would love to hear.

Many thanks in advance

Susan

Hi @Susan34646235nyvy, here are some potential workarounds and tips to help you regain control over the group/ungroup option:

Re-enable the "Show Layers" Option:

  • If the group/ungroup option disappears, double-check that Show Layers and Show Layer Timing are still active.
  • If they’ve been inadvertently toggled off, re-enable them from the toolbar.

Refresh the Project:

  • Save your progress and refresh the browser. This often resets the interface, bringing back missing options.

Select All Layers Manually:

  • Use the shift+click method to select multiple layers manually. Once all layers are selected, the Group option might reappear automatically.

Duplicate the Project:

  • If the option remains unavailable, try duplicating the project. Open the duplicate and check if the feature is accessible in the fresh file.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your ideas Chaimaa!

I tried the Re-enable the "Show Layers" Option, Refresh the Project, and Dupicate the Project strategies, and they did not work.

However I don't know how to step through the Select All Layers Manually approach. As mentioned, this is a video with captions. When I have the layers option selected, I see several individual panels on the right hand side (see attached image), which reflect the individual captions. I tried clicking on the shift key plus the return key (is that 'click'?) at the same time to multi-select the panels on the right hand side. However, that didn't seem to do anything.

Please let me know if there are any other specific steps I could try to do this correctly?

Thanks again!

Kind regards,

Susan

,

Thanks for your response. Looks like your request is already created to select multiple layers from the layers panel- https://adobe.ly/4iqWj2W. Please upvote and add your comments, as this page is being monitored by our product team.
