how can I add a drop shadow in AE to an object or image (not text)?

As of now, this feature is not readily available in Adobe Express, but our team is working on getting it. You can also let our product team know about your interest in adding it to the app by voting for it here: https://adobe.ly/47KNgoB.

 

Until then, here’s a workaround that might help you get a drop shadow.

  1. Duplicate the layer you want to add a shadow to.
  2. Blur the duplicated layer.
  3. Adjust brightness/contrast to make it look more shadow-like.
  4. Use Multiply Blend mode if needed.
  5. Reduce opacity for a more natural effect.
  6. Position the original layer above the shadow layer until it looks right.
