Question

Using at Template creates a File in a "Template" Project

We recently moved all of our templates from the brand to a dedicated project just for templates. We’ve been making updates, but noticed that when someone “uses” a template, rather than creating and saving a new file to their “My Stuff” it’s saving that newly created file in the folder with all the Templates. We don’t want ALL files created from our templates to save to that folder, which will be available to everyone in our org, we want them to save to My Stuff, like they used to.

Is there any way to modify where files are created when using custom templates?

@Amitej S We previously had our templates stored under our Brand, but moved them based on this banner message, stating that templates not moved into a Project would become unusable after August 31

Also supported by this page: https://helpx.adobe.com/express/web/brands-libraries-projects/create-projects-libraries/organize-templates-in-projects.html, stating that we need to move our templates to a project to continue using them.

We also can’t save new templates we create to our brand, even if we wanted to, we can only save them to a Project.

We’re a large university and we will potentially have thousands of people using these templates -- we DO NOT want to have every new design created from a template housed in our templates project. We created that project SPECIFICALLY to ONLY house our brand templates and nothing else.

I also tried giving one co-worker “Comment Only” access (there was no “View Only” option) and when they created a design from a template, it still saved to that project.

Hi @Amanda Hyer, This is expected behavior in Adobe Express, templates stored in a Project save new files into that project rather than to the user's Your stuff.

If moving the templates back into a Brand isn't an option right now, here are a few workarounds to try in the meantime:

    • Make a copy: instruct users to click Make a copy when they open the template, the copy saves to their personal space instead of the shared folder.
    • View-only permissions: set the Templates project to view-only for general members. This may prevent files from being saved back into the folder unintentionally.
    • Duplicate into personal space first: users can duplicate the template file into their own Your stuff before editing, keeping the shared folder clean.

The cleanest solution is to move the templates back into a Brand as that's exactly what Brands are designed for in Express (centrally managed, but files created from them save to each user's own space).

Hope one of these helps while you figure out the right setup!

     Best!
