Using music intros under speech

I'm trying to record my intro but I can't work out how to do it so speech doesn't start as soon as the music starts. I want a few seconds of music before speech. But if I record some silence before I speak, it's automatically edited out. I've also tried making sure the timer is set to 3 seconds in before I start recording speech, but it still puts it back to start at the same time as the music.
