Failed to initialize stage from file when trying to upload an STL file as mesh

I'm trying to import a Benchy STL file as a mesh, but I keep getting an error stating "Failed to initialize stage with given file". This isn't an error with the file, I've downloaded multiple from different sites and it happens every time I try to import one as mesh.

I'm on Windows 11 and I was initially using the newest Modeler version (1.7), but even went back all the way to 1.4.2, but still receiving the error. I'm following the same steps as the video tutorial here, but it's not working:

File > Import mesh > Select File > Change unit scale to Centimeters > Import > Error Message
