The missleading nature of the hands on bouncing ball tutorial (help!)...

I did the hands on bouncing ball tutorial that comes installed in the most recent version of Animate and it really helped me to understand the basic concepts of the software. 

However when I try to create my own project file from scratch, nothing works.

In the project file for the tutorial I can draw shapes and import bitmaps, but when I try to do that in a new project, my work his hidden (like it's behind a layer). I've attached screen shots. 

Help?
