Question

Adobe Audition records audio slightly faster than the playback at a constant rate, despite matching all sample rate settings and testing different audio interfaces and drivers.

Adobe Audition Records Audio Slightly Faster Than Playback at a Constant Rate

Hello, I am experiencing a recording issue in Adobe Audition's Multitrack mode and would appreciate some help.

1. Problem Description

When recording while playing a backing track (MR), the recorded audio is consistently slightly faster than the playback.

The recording does not gradually get faster over time. Instead, the entire recording is sped up by a consistent ratio, causing it to drift out of sync with the backing track.

2. Troubleshooting Steps I Have Tried

I have tried several troubleshooting methods, but none of them have resolved the issue.

  • Matched sample rates and related settings: I checked and matched the relevant sample rate, Hz, and other audio settings across Adobe Audition, my audio interface, Windows, and the rest of the system.

  • Loopback tests: I performed loopback tests and other diagnostic tests.

  • Changed audio interfaces: I switched to a different audio interface, but the problem persisted.

  • Tried ASIO4ALL: I tested ASIO4ALL as an alternative driver, but it did not solve the problem.

  • Tested different versions of Adobe Audition: I installed and tested multiple versions. One version recorded correctly, but the issue occurred in subsequent versions.

3. Audition Version

Based on my testing, the issue started with Adobe Audition 2023 version 23.5.0.48.

A specific earlier version worked correctly, but the issue has persisted in versions since then.

Since changing audio settings, hardware, and drivers has not resolved the issue, I suspect it may be related to Adobe Audition itself, although I have not been able to confirm the exact cause.

4. Question

Does anyone know what might cause this issue or how to fix it? I would appreciate any suggestions from people who have experienced or resolved a similar problem.

Thank you!

    Hi,

Thanks for the detailed write-up. Since ASIO4ALL and a second interface produced the same result, I’d also recommend testing with a different driver type.

    Try MME (and WASAPI)

    1. Open Edit > Preferences > Audio Hardware.
    2. Change Audio Driver to MME.
    3. Re-select your Default Input and Default Output devices.
    4. Restart Adobe Audition.
    5. Record a short sample while playing the backing track.

Since MME routes audio through the Windows audio engine, this test will help determine whether the issue is specific to ASIO-based drivers. If WASAPI is available in the Audio Driver list, it would be worth testing that as well and comparing the results.

    Regards
    Abhishek

@Pom_9Ming   MME has a slight latency, but the recording does not play back at a faster speed. WASAPI behaved similarly to MME.

However, I would prefer to use ASIO for recording.

If you open the Settings tab you get to see the SSL driver options. One of them is a Driver Error compensation tab. Chances are that you will need to experiment with this to get everything lined up.

    Should look like this:

This is the Ableton Live preferences window, and as far as I know, Adobe Audition doesn't have a "Driver Error Compensation" tab. Is that correct?

That is the image provided by SSL about their ASIO driver. The app shouldn’t be relevant - this is about driver compensation, and that’s not an Audition function; Audition just accepts what it has been sent. That said, not all ASIO drivers give the same degree of control; the RME Fireface ones certainly let you control all sorts of aspects of clock behaviour, so I’m assuming that SSL do as well - since that image came from them. I ran up the DAW here and grabbed a screenshot of the RME Fireface settings panel, accessed directly from Audition; you’ll get the idea:

If you go to the Audio Hardware settings (Edit>Preferences), what is the clock source you are using? I think you should be using the Out: setting, not the In: one.

Thanks for your suggestion. I checked both Adobe Audition's Audio Hardware settings and the SSL USB Control Panel, but I couldn't find a Clock Source option or any In/Out selection.

I'm using the SSL ASIO Driver 1 at 48,000 Hz. Could you please clarify where exactly I can find this setting, or share a screenshot?

    Thank you for your help.

Since you are using the SSL ASIO Driver, that specific option might not appear in your settings window.

Could you please try checking the box for "Force hardware to document sample rate"?
Also, regarding your mention of verifying the Windows audio settings, did you mean that you enabled "Exclusive Mode" for the driver you are using under both the Playback and Recording tabs in the Sound Settings? Lastly, since this issue seems to start occurring from a specific version, it might have been patched in the Beta version. Could you try running a test in the Beta version as well?

    Hello,

Thank you for providing such a detailed description of the troubleshooting steps you've already taken.
Since you have already verified the sample rates, audio interfaces, and drivers, we may need to look into the specific system environment or potential software conflicts.
Could you please share your PC specifications (CPU, RAM, and Windows OS version)?
Also, if you are currently using any third-party plugins in your Multitrack session, does the same issue persist if you disable all plugins and try a clean, raw recording?
Knowing this will help us narrow down the cause further. Thank you.

    Hello,

I'm running Windows 11 with the latest available updates. I've attached screenshots showing my CPU and RAM specifications.

The issue persists even when all third-party plugins are disabled in the Multitrack session. I also tested a clean recording with no plugins enabled, but the problem remained.

Thank you for your response and for taking the time to help. I really appreciate your support. I would be grateful if you could continue investigating this issue and help me find a solution. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

    Thank you again!
