After a computer update, and many problems now solved, I cannot get sound out of Adobe Audition. I can record, but it's all in mono, and hearing as I play - mono, and only if I turn up the USB/Direct knob on my interface.

Ok, couple months ago, the mandatory computer update happened.  Adobe Audition would not open.  After 3 computer techs, and an online “Answer guy”, and after uninstalling and installing drivers for M Audio 192/6 several times, I can open the program, but I’m not getting any sound out of the normal M Audio settings on the interface.  I can hear whatever I’m inputting, and I can record it, but it comes out in mono.  If I turn the USB/Direct knob off, there is no sound.  If I open a previously recorded session, everything appears normal - everything plays, pannings are there, stereo’d tracks are stereo.  So, no sound unless I turn up the USB/Direct knob, and anything I listen to or record will be mono.  I’ve exhaustingly looked at the Hardware setup, everything looks normal, same for the computer sound and speaker settings - everything looks right.  This is after about 3 years and hundreds of sessions without problems.  Only after the update did all this bs start.

In Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware, which device class are you using? Have you tried altering this to a different one?

Ok, so I had a computer tech wipe my computer, then reinstall a clean version of Windows 11.  There seems to be one thing left, I’m guessing a setting that’s not set right.  On my M Audio 192/6 interface, if I have the USB/Direct knob on USB, there is no signal, if I turn the knob towards Direct, I can hear what I’m playing.  So, it appears there’s no signal going to the USB, as I can only hear what’s coming out of the interface.  I’ve looked and looked at the settings, I don ‘t see anything that looks like what I’m describing.

    Hi Steve,

I tried all three - ASIO, WASAPI, and MME.  At some point, ASIO disappeared off the menu.  Apparrently, there was some kind of screwup with one of the mandatory computer updates, relating to MIDI, and it messed up some people’s computers so that we could not open or operate our DAWs.  I have uninstalled and installed drivers several times, I’ve taken my computer to 2 computer techs, and talked to a FixIt guy on the internet - no progress.  Supposedly, Microsoft has sent out an update with a “Fix” for this problem.  I haven’t gotten it so far, but they’re saying all users should get the update before May 1st.  So, we’ll see.  I’m figuring if I don’t get any results, I’ll have to get a new computer, and disable the ridiculous updates, seems the only way I can protect myself from damage to my computer.

Once again, thanks for your help.
