After crash, 4 hours of work and severals saves were gone?

This may or may not be the case with your girlfriend's session:  If any MONO file in the session is formatted as a Wide Orbit wav (read or write) or if Audition tries to save a MONO file as a Wide Orbit wav (sometimes Audition defaults to this format when saving) the program will immediately crash. Things seem to work fine with 2-Channel files. If this is the case, try exporting the session (FILE menu)  instead of saving, check the "Save Copies of Associated Files" box then press "options" then choose any format OTHER than Wide Orbit (such as wav PCM). Alternatively, you can open each MONO file and from the Edit menu choose "convert sample type" and change the "channels" setting to "Stereo."

Same here.  I 'save as' every few minutes (under the File menu) and while two of the crashes saved up to where I was working, meaning Audition asked me if I wanted to continue the session, the third crash wiped out 3/4 of the project.  There was no sound available and an ugly straight line where all the dialog had been moments before.   All my hard earned edits were gone.  It was only because I had an external hard drive attached and was periodically saving to that as well, that I had anything to work on.

I always save my raw files in another folder and in the other hard drive, but that won't get back the work that was done.

In other words, the file I was working on was completely destroyed on the third crash.

Which version of Audition? This will need to be reported to the developers. See the FAQs Audition Crashed.  Now what? in order to do so.

When you say 'all those saves were gone' do you mean that the final file with all the edits had disappeared or that you were expecting to find several different versions of the file at each edit stage? When you Save using Ctrl+S Audition will overwrite the previous file since it is saved with the same file name in the same file path. Normally it is safer always to do a Save As when you start work on an audio file so that the original remains intact and the edited file has a different name from the original. Then you have something to go back to. Also it is sometimes good to save the file with a different addition to the file name at each type of audio signal process. Thus you end up with lots of files but you can easily go back a stage if you need to redo anything.

Going back to your original question. It is quite likely that Audition was doing the saves as you went along and when you restarted after the crash it actually opened the fully edited file.

P,S. This sort of thing is why quite a lot of people prefer to work in the Multitrack view even for simple editing since it is completely non destructive of the original audio file. The newly edited file is only produced when you finally Export or Mixdown the session.

I don't know whether you're using a Mac or a PC, but on a PC the keyboard shortcut for save is Ctrl+S.  But if Audition has crashed, then you need to do what it says here: Audition Crashed. Now what?
