When I first got it audition and premier were working just fine and happily working with my sound card. Then suddenly it said my Nvidia graphics card was not compatible (I chose the laptop I have specifically based on Adobe saying my graphics card was recommended) so I updated the programs and magically the graphics card is totally fine again, but now the soundcard does not work and am getting an error as above. I have also tried 2 different external soundcards since (both which worked previously) and nothing works.

I'm assuming that this is a PC. You need to go to Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware and make sure that your ssoundcard is the one selected for use with Audition. Can't tell you any more without knowing what it actually is though. Ideally, you'd use one with an ASIO driver, but you should get at least basic functionality from an MME driver.
