Question

I have a promo video for a non-profit. I've balanced the speech with the music for playback on a computer or TV, But would love a second version that can be played on a big soundsystem at crowded (read loud) events, where the speech is eq'd to stick out more be less muddy. Is it as simple as taking out some of the lower requencies as event speakers tend to be pretty bass heavy?

Rather than filtering out frequencies, I'd have a play with compression with things set up to lift the voice out of the music.

If you're not an expert on audio compressors, Audition has a couple of presets that would make good starting points for you. Under the Multibrand Compressor there's one called "Raise Vocals" or under the Tube Modelled Compressor there's one called "Voice Thickener". Since you're making a second version, your best bet is to go back to the original tracks and apply the compression to the voices only, not the music.

If you're brave, it's worth having a bit of a play with the compressor adjustments, I'd start with little adjustments to the threshold and gain. Also, on the Multiband (if you choose that one) you can modify the centre frequencies of each band a little--you may find that different setting will be useful on the male voices than the female.
