Question

Are there ANY plans to add folders/bins to Audition?

It goes without saying this is beyond overdue. The uservoice thread to this hasn't been updated in a year.

Has this extremely basic feature that's available is all other Adobe software been abandoned?

Like Steve, I've talked with engineers about this at NAB and MAX. The direct answer is always that there's bins in Premiere if you need them. And realistically, Au is an addendum for working with Premiere as far as the "product development" is seen within Adobe.

So that Au does work for audio outside the purview of video post processing is nice, but ... it ain't any major consideration for development purposes.

Remember, this is the Adobe DVA apps group ... digital video/audio, DVA ...

And yea, there's times that's a pain. Like for getting actual bins for Au, and for getting midi stuff in. Neither of which is ... likely. I'd like both personally but hey, I want SpeedGrade back also ... and I'll live to be 246 before that happens ... ha.

I had a look at the UserVoice page, and I think that Durin's last statement says it all, really. I believe that if there was any update on the situation, he would have said so, and it would have appeared in a beta release at least. Like a lot of stuff, it appears to be a Covid thing, as much as anything.

Adobe generally only admit to anything when they're ready to launch it. They've always been like that. Like most audio users, personally I'm not that bothered - there's no tradition of using 'bins' in audio - it was always a film thing. As long as you're a bit organised, you can use the Media Browser to achieve much of the same functionality and the developers know this - which may also have something to do with it.

What's more likely is that in order to work properly as an integrated component, especially with Premiere, a lot of work has to be done that isn't perhaps blindingly obvious. Another argument along similar lines is that when it comes to video enhancement, then having a smooth round trip to Audition is what counts, and that this effectively makes bins in Audition redundant.

I honestly don't know which argument it is, and I have no more idea about this than anybody else does - except the developers. The one thing I can be sure of though is that if the corporate users want it, then it will happen; they're the ones paying for it after all - not the individual users.

Thanks Steve for a nice well rounded answer. This is the link to the uservoice page, it's the top requested/voted feature to be added: https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911314-audition/suggestions/33841873-folders-bins-for-file-management

It's hard to switch from always having and using folders in all of the other Adobe software to having none, so while from a purist audio technician viewpoint I can see that, from a practical and user interface point of view it's a must.
