Audio file sounds blank in multitrack session - Audition

Question

Hey guys, first time seeking help here.I've been having this annoying issue with a specific recording that just wont play in any way in the multitrack session. I've tried converting it to mp3, wave, cutting parts of it all, but to no avail. I have linked here a video that will clear things up. Yes, that was a part of my original attempt at diagnosis, and we don't appear to have received anything other than an extremely ambiguous answer to that.

What exactly does that mean?

That means I tried playing that same problematic file in a different multitrack session, but it still didn't work.

"Have you tried opening that particular file on it's own in a brand new simple stereo session without any busses, effects or any other complex routing to see if it plays there OK?"

Yes, I tried, and it didn't work, initially.

No worries, though! I got it to work, somehow. All I did was literally the same thing I'd done before: I created a new multitrack session and the file played there. Not really sure what was the problem, but it's gone now. Thanks for the assist, SteveG & Ryclark!

Well for starters, it's not possible to put an MP3 into multi-track or Waveform view as an MP3 - it has to be decoded to a wav before you can use it at all - that's the way Audition works. Now, there's a large exclamation mark in a triangle in the corner of it - if you hover the mouse over it, what does it say? What it generally means is that you've deleted part of the file you're trying to play in Waveform view - which would certainly explain why it won't play.

My suggestion is to open the file in Waveform view - which will decode it; it has to, as I said. Get rid of any previous instances of it in your multi-track session (remove the file from the session, and get rid of the clip outlines too, so nothing is set to be offline). When it's all gone, try placing the freshly opened track, as it stands, from the files menu straight into your session and see if it plays then. If it doesn't, then open a fresh session and place it in that and see if it plays. If it does in the new session, then your original session file is corrupted, I suspect.
