Audio Help :(

Question

Hello! I am new to using Audition.. I use it to edit art tutorials that I record - just simple noise reduction and amplify is all I really know how to do.

I did a recording today and I don't know what happened to the mic but in this one (very large) section I've picked up a whole bunch of static so something must have gone wrong. I've tried noise reducing it but I can't get rid of the buzz in the background.

Is anyone able to help or suggest what I can do 😞 I can't re-record it as it's an art piece and I've moved on from this point in the tutorial but I have to do it for work due in 2 days so I'm stressing haha.

What you have is the effect of an earth screen in the mic lead dropped off or disconnected somehow - you can hear it happen right at the start! The noise itself is all the harmonics of the mains hum it's picked up because of the faulty screening. The easiest way to get rid of most of it is to use the Sound Removal Tool - default settings are fine. You have to select a part where there's just the hum with no talking (I used the bit that started at 40secs) and then select a suitable portion (it won't let you do the whole file in one go - apparently it's too large), check the 'enhance for speech' button and then hit the effect preview button. If you're happy with the result, you just hit 'apply' and it will remove all of the hum and its harmonics from the highlighted section. Repeat for the whole file. When I tried a bit it was way better. Not perfect, but I don't think you'll achieve perfection with this, as there are a lot of harmonics to get rid of.

You need to get the mic and its lead looked at, or you may have to do this a few more times!
