Question

Yesterday I shot a subject on camera that was about 8 ft away. He was miked with a Rode wireless lav. When I screened the clips later, his voice was real low. It's as if the lav never worked and instead his voice was picked up by the internal camera mic. So the subject not only sounds low but distant.

What is best way to improve this audio?

I boosted the gain, and this brought up the BG noise, so I added a denoiser which worked great, but the suject still sounds distant. His presence seems far away. I am not the best when it comes to audio effects, so any help is appreciated.

You can't make a distant sound sound close - that's the reason that people use lav and lapel mics, and mics on boom poles. It's not a matter of effects or treatment or anything like that - it's all about the acoustic, and you simply can't 'unacoustic' a room! It's the same as baking a cake; the sound of the room is mixed spatially and temporally with the person speaking, and you simply can't get that out. And that's what makes it sound more 'distant' to our ears.

Is there absolutely nothing on the lav track, however quiet?
