Audio Time Shifting Issue

So for a podcast for a client, this has happened the past two weeks during recording (see attached file).

The audio starts recording normally, but a few minutes in (10mins or so?) the audio begins to sound like this. It sounds like it is speeding up? The actual length of the file gets stretched too and loses sync from the zoom recorded file (which records fine). It seems when monitoring the audio while recording they don't notice this happening, but once recorded and playing back it''s obviously screwy. Some things to note:

- We are still remote working, and they self record. I only get their files and mix

- They are simultaniously recording into zoom as well as Audition, using a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2

- Signal path is Sm7 --(xlr)-> cloudlift cl-1 --(xlr)-> Focusrite --(usb)-> PC --> Recording session on their zoom call for producer QC/Audition simultaniously

Without being there, I've suggested ensuring that the system sample rate of the Focusrite as well as Audition are all matching, and to be sure they are using the same clock. Besides that, they could do the zoom recording with a seperate interface, rather than the same Focusrite being used to record to Audition, but I'm not sure they have the pieces to make that happen currently. I think they want the highest fidelity for the zoom as a backup (rather than just using the built in mic?)

Any thoughts??

Does this start suddenly? One possibility is that something has grabbed the sound device and altered its sample rate whilst recording, and reduced it considerably. If they are recording on a Windows machine, that would almost certainly be the OS. Do they have all the system sounds turned off? That's a favourite for this sort of corruption. It's worth checking all of the Focusrite options in Audition to make absolutely sure that nothing is going to attempt to disturb them. It shouldn't happen, but I don't trust Microsoft as far as I can throw them...
