Audition 3.0 and windows 10 error

Good day. I have been using Audition 3.0 for several years. Recently I have discovered a problem that I don't understand. I have songs that were recorded on a flash drive from a professional mixer at 44,000 Hz, 16 Bit Stereo, edited to remove spaces, normalized to 90% and saved in MP3 Format. Some of those songs were then edited to create a clip of the song to be used in advertisements for a band. If I Import just the clip, all is well in Multi-Track or Edit mode. I also have some voice-over tracks that were recorded using Audition that went through the same editing process as the songs. the voice-over tracks also work well in either Multi-Track or edit mode. If I try to import both a clip and a voice-over, I get an error message stating that the formats do not match. the error message occurs when I try to load the second element into the Multi-Track mode. It doesn't matter which one is entered first, the error message appears on the second entry. When I import only one of the items, the selection plays in stereo mode in Edit mode, but in Mono mode in Multi-Track even though the screen shows stereo. I don't understand what the problem is. I hope someone has an answer. I appreciate any help with this one.

I tried this here just to make sure - if you import two MP3 tracks in Multitrack view and mix them, it works fine - certainly with tracks where the bit rates are the same, anyway. What Audition 3 does in the background is convert these MP3 files back to Wav, as that's what Audition uses internally. On later versions, you get to see the process rather more transparently, as an actual copy is created and put in the file list. This copy is in the format that the session is in. In Audition 3 this only happens if you try to import an MP3 at a different sample rate - you get a message like this:

And subsequently, you get file conversion boxes, but basically you get the MP3 converted to the session sample rate and inserted as a wav file. You can confirm this by looking at the result in Edit view, at the bottom of the screen.

If this isn't what's happening for you, then I think I'd look carefully at whatever the processing options for the second file are when it's inserted, because it sounds as though it's converting the stereo MP3 original into a mono wav file, and inserting that...
