Audition CC 2019 Crashing Issue

When I am in the media browser and clicking on the files with the play/preview button engaged, it would sometimes crash after previewing just a few files. I contacted Adobe and the support agent said my graphics card wasn't sufficient to run the new version. I thought that was crazy, the card is only 4 years old and it was a pretty good one, but I went ahead and upgraded to a new one. (GTX 1060) It didn't help, and although I was pissed, I could only be pissed at myself because I should have known that support agent was incorrect.

I should say this crash was new to 2019. Downgrading to the 2018 version eliminated the problem. So I spent several more hours with two separate support agents and nobody could find the issue. After giving up with Adobe, I kept working on my own, noticing a pattern in the crash. It would happen after clicking on one of two folders on the drive. After looking through hundreds of files to find anything different in those folders, I discovered each of them had an .AVI file in it. (no other folders on my computer contained .AVIs) I realized that as the program scanned the files to prepare for previewing, it would get caught on the .AVI file and freeze up. This didn't happen when actually previewing the file, just in the preparation scan. After removing the offending files, one from each of those two folders, no more crashing.

Adobe, if you're reading this, my wife thinks I've already spent too much on my studio this year and although I'm fighting to keep it, that needless graphics card didn't help!

Clearly the agent didn't get it right (appears to have applied zero logic, indeed) but 'only four years old'? That's almost a lifetime in graphic card terms!

Adobe probably won't be reading this (although they occasionally do) since it is a User to User forum. However as it was a crash you could have reported it directly to the Audition developers by going to the FAQ Audition Crashed.  Now what?

I told the last support agent I spoke with how I resolved the issue, he said he'd send it up the chain, so I left it at that. But great tip, I'll bookmark that link for future reference! Many thanks.
