audition crashes when dragging a certain file into multitrack

having trouble with version of audition CC2019 12.1.  I produce radio programs, and there are several files I use repeatedly within many programs.  lately, one certain file that I've used for at least two years has been crashing audition multitrack.  I drag the file into multitrack and boom - session crashes.  sometime the session is recoverable.  tonight two hours work disappeared because it couldn't recover the session.  I tried creating new copies of the file, but it just kept crashing after being dragged in.

what would cause this?
