Audition CS5.5 Stops Recording

Good Afternoon all -

I am experiencing a novel problem with Adobe Audition, where it randomly stops recording (at no set time or even number).  I did find a similar thread in the Community (here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/audition/stops-recording/td-p/9267038?page=1), but my specific problem is a little bit different.  In addition, I tried the solutions there and followed the suggested links, but with no success.

Audition will be cranking along as usual, and then suddenly stop recording.  It does it in a unique way.  The time/clock at the bottom continues as usual, the meter continues to display input sound level accurately, and the record button stays illuminated.  Howver, the in-progress waveform disappears - just flatlines.  After I stop the recording, I am able to confirm that there is only 5 minutes or so of audio (whenever the waveform stopped), not the final number indicated on the clock.  Listening back, just as the audio nears the end point, there's a quick ~0.25 s stutter (exactly like a skipping CD or record), and then silence.  

Any ideas on where I should read/attmept to fix first?  Thank you all, in advance, for any help or advice you can provide.

Machine/OS details: ASUS PC with an AMD FX 6300 six core, 3.5 GHz, 16 GB RAM, running Windows 10 Home.

Audition details: Audition CS5.5, version 4.0, build 1815.  Recording in waveform mode.
