Question

Audition keeps Selecting All and Copying to Clipboard every few seconds

This just started happening yesterday for me and is driving me nuts. I use the 5 clipboards extensively to cut and paste audio while I'm editing but Audition is now randomly but frequently selecting my entire audio clip and copying it to the clipboard. This is then overwriting what I've already saved to the clipboard and instead of pasting the one small audio clip I'm trying to paste, I'm pasting the entire audio file.

To workaround it I'm having to quickly copy to my Clipboard and then switch to a second Clipboard before the random Select All/Copy happens.

Searching the internet I've found the primary suggestion is to delete the temporary files and/or the preferences and start fresh.

System:

  • PC
  • Windows 11
  • Adobe Audition 2025 (but it's happening in 2024 and 2023 as well)

Steps I've taken:

  • Backed up (exported) my preference files
  • Deleted the Temporary directories and restarted
  • Reset all Audition preferences
  • Disabled all of my plugins
  • Charged my mouse in case it's a bluetooth issue
  • Cleaned all dust out of my mouse
  • Checked all the keyboard keys to make sure it's not a sticky key
  • Checked my keyboard shortcuts in Audition to make sure there's no shortcut set for "Select All and Copy" (there isn't)
  • Uninstalled all versions of Adobe Audition I had on my system (2023, 2024 and 2025)
  • Reinstalled 2025 Audition only
  • Restarted/rebooted my PC numerous times

I've spent probably 4 hours on this to troubleshoot and I'm not having any luck.

"Adobe Audition 2025 (but it's happening in 2024 and 2023 as well)"

I think you've just identified a problem with your computer, not Audition - that's the only common factor here, and nobody else has ever reported this. It might be worth checking your mouse's actual driver - these have been known to cause all sorts of strange issues.

But if it is temp file related, then there are several things you need to check. One of the issues with running a lot of clipboards is that the contents of all of them - plus any undos - have to be stored in a temporary location, and the more you put into this, the greater the chances of trouble are (although your particular issue does seem a bit strange from this POV).

Things  you can do: Set up a separate temp directory on a different drive. A good solution here is an external usb-connected SSD that you can dedicate solely to this task; this tends to make a lot of issues go away. Also, go into Settings and reduce the number of undos you have set; this can make a major difference to temp storage issues. If you are using multiple clipboards, then set it to no more than 3.

I'm reporting it here because I DID see other people reporting it, but not here. (Reddit, random message boards, etc.) The consensus I found was that it possibly related to the preference files which is why I mentioned following those steps.

Thank you for your suggestions on "reducing the number of undos" - that is something I hadn't found yet. However, I could not find a way to reduce the number of Undos in Settings. I have researched and it doesn't seem to be an option in Audition 2025.  (I've also checked Windows > History and there is no Settings section in that.)

I have updated all drivers (mouse drivers specifically, I'm using a Logitech MX Ergo) and all Creative Cloud files and I'm up to date on Windows 11 updates as well.

I will report back if I find a solution.

My primary and secondary Temp Directories are both set up on separate drives from the drive Audition is running on.  (Audition is running from the C drive. Temp Disk Caches are on D and E which are both SSD drives.)

Now adding, it is not mouse related. I've tried disabling the mouse entirely and using the trackpad on the laptop. It does not change the behavior. Notably, it is only happening in Audition and in no other programs, software, browsers, etc.
