Audition selection issue

When i select a frequency of a background noise with the marquee selection tool and hit delete it mutes my whole song for some reason? is there a way to fix this?

Need a bit more information here, I think - there's nothing in Preferences that can alter the normal behaviour of the delete key - it deletes what's selected. When you make the selection and hit Delete, does the operation appear to carry out correctly on the screen? And is the waveform still present?
