Audition skips when I record, waveform lagging behind recording

Hi, these are fairly new issues I'm experiencing. When recording, sometimes Audition will skip a piece of my recording. Also, I've noticed that the waveform is lagging behind my speech when recording now. The sound is much scratchier than it used to be as well - it seems like it's recording me very loud even though I haven't changed anything in my set up.

My set up is a PC, to a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and a compressor with a Rode mic. If you need data and settings, please tell me EXACTLY what it is/where to get it! I'm not real familiar with Audition/other hardware so don't know all the settings. Appreciate any and all assistance.

Actually, before going anywhere near any settings, we need to know whether you are recording in Waveform or Multitrack views - they are completely different from each other in this regard. Obviously, you've tried one - have you tried the other?

It's waveform. I haven't really used multitrack at all.

In that case (as I must admit that I suspected...) give Multitrack recording a try. If you record in Waveform view, your recording initially goes to a temp file, and isn't written to your final file until you save it. The trouble with this is that unless you've changed the default location for where Audition keeps its temp files, it's a shared space in the folder that the OS uses - and that gets priority. Also the OS can resize the space its using, and this alone can cause all sorts of upsets.

Multitrack recording, on the other hand, was a later innovation in which your recording get written directly to its final destination file. So no interruptions from temp file manipulation at all, and it's generally what we recommend unless you've relocated Audition's temp file location to somewhere much safer. Ideally, on another drive in your machine would be a good choice.
