'Audition stopped playing'

I just want to say thank you to Steve G for directing me here.

This was my issue (below), but I resolved it, so posting in case it can be helpful to someone else who may experience the same.

The lesson: Ensure you are always updated with your software and especially with the firmware and drivers of your sound card.

I believe it was the updating of the sound card drivers that ultimately solved the issue.

Audition 2019 just stopped working. I work pretty exclusively in wav files. When I open up a file it opens fine but does not play. None of the buttons respond. I opened up a new file to test recording and again, opens normal but nothing responds.

I did notice a weird issue just this week that while listening to a wav file in Audition I opened up a PDF and the sound just stopped though it kept playing. Restarting the program fixed it so I just carried on thinking it was just a one time glitch. But it happened a few more times and now this. I've updated Audition just now, checked for updated firmware on my sound card, restarted, etc., to no avail.

My system: PC/Windows 10/ Sound card: Motu 8A
