Audition unwanted distortion

We are bulk processing a lot of soundfiles containing speech, normalizing them to -3dB.

Everyone once in a while, something like this happens:

Volume is raised to the max, which causes a very loud distortion. It usually lasts less than a second.

The audio is not recorded in Audition. We are on Windows 10.

Any idea what might be causing this, and how it can be avoided?

Need to know more about the entire chain of events. Is this something that happens during processing, or is it in the file in the first place? Generally it's driver errors that cause this sort of thing. It isn't distortion as such - that's a digital error.

No, it is not in the file before, it is caused by Audition. And it seems to be somewhat random, it generally doesn't happen again in the same place if we run the file again.

What driver would that be? Can it be replaced?

In that case it won't be caused by Audition, and is very likely to be caused by a 'faulty' hard disk. If it was caused by Audition it would affect everybody, and it doesn't.

When I say 'faulty' it may not be real fault, but possibly a conflict in access to a temp file - this would certainly explain the randomness of it. The most obvious thing to try is setting up a new location for your temp files in a different location (ideally on a separate drive) from the default, which unfortunately the OS has access to...
