Auto Silence by Audio Levels?

Question

Greetings all, I'm a novice when it comes to using Audition and audio engineering in general. I just started working on some projects as a hobby, no prior experience. So please forgive my lack of knowledge and lingo However I have a question and I don't know it's possible.

Is there an easy way to auto silence parts of a track based on audio levels? I did some recording with a partner, they sent me their audio file and listening their mic is picking up my audio, because it was coming through speakers not headphones. Obviously my feed back is a much lower level when heard vs when she is talking. I'm wondering if there's a way to filter out the backround audio on her track?

I'm layering our tracks over each other in a multi-track session and our timing isn't exactly synced up which also may be an issue.

Almost certainly the easiest way to do this is to use a 'noise gate' - basically some specific settings in the Dynamics Processor. The advantage of doing it this way is that you can easily preview the results until you like the (lack of) sound you've got. You have to be a little careful with this, otherwise speech can start to sound 'clipped'. The basic settings are something like this:

I modified the existing 20dB preset and saved it. This is going to be more like a realistic starting point than the ones that are there already, I suspect.
