Can anyone advice how to remove a big annoying bang from speech audio?

Doing it that way won't work

BUT

What you can do is select most of the bang and turn down the gain. Yes doing so will take out part of the MMM in the word 'makeover'.

BUT you can then grab the MMM from the word 'made' and paste that over the top

I did this in about a minute in waveform view 

IMO with a bit more care you would get very acceptable results 

You can paint this out pretty easily without affecting the speech at all, as the majority of the bang happens before the word following it. You just have to zoom in close and take it out in sections - the bright yellow at the bottom first, and then some of the other bits above it. The aim is to get the background noise level to look similar across the frequency band, so rather than taking out all of it, you just take out enough to do that - 16-17dB. And you do this with the HUD, ideally. With the bright yellow parts, obviously you have to take out rather more, but you only need to attenuate it, not use any other effects. I've attached what I did (very quickly) to this post - if you look at it in the spectral display it should be obvious.
