Can't hear myself recording in Audition

I just started using Audition on my 2015 MacBook Pro and I can't hear myself through my headphones when recording. I can record and playback sound just fine, but just can't hear myself as I'm doing it. I haven't had this trouble using other programs (Garage Band) but am sure I'm just missing a simple setting. I saw one reference in an older post about this issue to click on the "I" (Monitory input) in the multi-track editing area, but for some reason I can't select it. (It's greyed out). What am I doing wrong?

A few things,  (and a high probability that none of them will be helpful. But I like the sound of my own voice, so here goes...)

My audio goes through an interface and my voice is muted or un-muted with that software. Are you going directly into your MAC, or an audio interface? You don't say.

I need to hear my voice for some things to sound out proper pronunciation, accent, age target... So I know how important it is. But I do better recordings when I am muted during recording. Just my thoughts for when you get this resolved.

reading what I wrote... not very helpful. But at least you may be moved to the top of the board because of my reply. Horray! I am useful!!!
