Clarification on Markers and Saving Files

Hi All,

I'm considering switching to Audition as my full time editor because of how great I think the current workflow is for markers. (I work with interviews, so being able to log the time and then see those sections when I move over to multitrack editing is truly great.)

However, before I do this, I want to be totally clear on how markers are saved and how they work, and I can't find this information readily available. So sorry of this is a n00b question, but:

1) Are markers saved to the file itself, or to that sidecar .pkf file?

2) In either case, does file renaming affect retaining markers?

What I'm really hoping I can do is keep all of my original raw interviews in one place and drag their marked sessions into various multitrack projects as needed.

Any insight here would be much appreciated.

All best,

Craig

It depends on which view of Audition you are working in to place the Markers. Working in Waveform view, which is destructive, the Markers are saved complete with their labels within the .wav file as metadata and will therefore follow the file around whatever you name it. But make sure that in the Save As pane (which you use to rename your audio file so that you don't overwrite the original) that you tick the box at the bottom left of the panel to 'Include markers and other metadata'.

However if you are working in the Multitrack view which is non-destructive markers you place there are assigned to the timeline and saved within the .sesx session file and won't travel with the audio file.

However Markers placed and saved within a .wav file will show up as dotted lines in the audio clips when imported into a track but won't show their names. Also you can Export selected Marker list as .csv files which can then be re-imported into another audio file.

P.S. The so called sidecar files only hold the waveform graphic representation of the audio file and are saved to save time when re-opening a long audio file since Audition doesn't have to recalculate them in order to redraw them. They are not critical to Audition's operation and you don't lose any data if you happen to erase or delete them.

Hi Ryclark—this is super helpful, thank you. While I have you here, I have an additional question about the "Markers" pane. I swore when I was writing this post last week I could get that pane to show Waveform markers even when I was in Multitrack view if the file was in my Files view, but now I can't seem to replicate that. Do you know if this is possible? I tried the "Import Markers from File" submenu but it did not pull in my marker names, which I thought was kind of odd.

Ah! I'm going to answer my own question here: you can "show markers across all open files" by toggling the icon on the far right of the markers pane! This is so great—this feature is described here:
