Clip gain v Volume envelope v Track volume in Multitrack

Am I correct - Clip gain & Volume envelope (line on clip that can be keyframed) are pre effects rack (clip & track), it seems, and the Track volume fader (which is the only one of the three that can be automated *I think*?) is post effects rack (clip & track)? Any other gotchas to using one over the other (I'm pretty clear that I mostly want to leave Track volume faders at unity for the most part, other than for submix busses)

Any links to useful descriptions of the three (I know, I should RTFM and will when I get a chance) gratefully received.

Thanks

Yes that is correct as you can easily check by watching the Effects Rack in/out meter display. You can think of the Track Volume control as the channel fader in the mixer whereas the Clip Volume Envelope is like a clip based input gain control.

    Thanks ryclark.

I *was* thinking of 'clip gain' as the input gain knob... so I guess clip volume envelope is like an additional gain knob, with keyframing!
