Combine two mono files into L/R stereo

Hey there, 
I have a Tascam recorder that created two mono files. I would like to combine these into a single file with one occupying the left channel and one occupying the right channel. 
I tried creating a new audio file and copying/pasting one of the files. But when I do that, it places the sound in both the left and right channels, so I don't know how I would get the other one to be included.

Excellent way to do it as SteveG mentions in multitrack view.

 

You can also click the L and R butttons in waveform view to enable and disable each channel and copy/paste on one channel only.

 

An example would be to copy track 1, disable the R channel and paste. Then enable R channel, disable L channel and paste in track 2.

    The easiest way to do this is to start a new stereo session, and add two mono tracks to it, in which you place your two files (one in each, obviously). Then pan one of them hard to the left, and the other hard to the right. Now, when you do a mixdown of the session, you'll have one stereo file with each file panned to the appropriate side. Save the result - you're done!
