Delayed Playback Large Files

Hi Guys,

  I'm running into an issue on the latest Audition CC 2017 on multiple computers. When I have a large file with 13+ tracks in it playback starts to take 5-7 seconds to start. (i.e. I press play to listen to the file, says "calculating playback" in the lower left corner, then 5-7 later it starts). I've tried increasing the buffer size of the ASIO driver, enabling optimal performance in Windows, with and without reverb.

I've tried the file on several computers and it does the same thing. All three computers have 8GB+ of RAM, either an i5 or quad-Xenon processor, and run either Windows 7 or 10. When I check the system performance monitor it does not seem to be stressing the CPU or RAM much at all.

We didn't have this problem with Pro Tools which we were planning on switching from but if Audition can't handle large files we may have to use that instead.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry guys, first time poster for Audition.

It's a large Multi-Track session file with 13+ audio files in the playback section. The problem we are running into is that when you hit play it says "calculating playback" in the lower-left corner and takes about 5-7 seconds to start playback. Picture attached for reference:

It only takes a couple seconds to open the file, and scrubbing seems normal but playback is delayed. I've tried it with and without reverb to try to optimize it. Hopefully that clears it up a bit.

What effects are you suing on the tracks? Some, like Full Reverb, take a lot of computing power. So if you have all tracks each with an individual Full Reverb on you will get some delay whilst Audition does it's calculations. You can get round this by Freezing the effects heavy tracks which will keep them pre-rendered. To do so just click on the little Lightning icon in either the top right of the Effects Rack in each Track header or bottom of the Effects Rack panel.

Well I saw Full Reverb at the top of your effects list. That alone takes several seconds to calculate before it applies...

Are we talking about a lot of tracks in a session, or a large multi-channel file here? If it's a large file in Waveform view, Audition's behaviour is different from what happens with multiple files being streamed into a Multi-track session. IOW, I think we need a little more information!

When you first open a file into Audition it will always take a little longer because Audition has to generate the Waveform view of the file. Obviously with a very large high sample rate high bit depth audio file this will take longer. However Audition normally saves the Waveform file as a .pkf file alongside the original .wav file. So subsequent openings of the same file will be much quicker.

I not sure if this helps with your problem but as Steve asks we need a bit more info about the file type, format and size and whether you are having this problem in the Waveform or Multitrack view.
