Dialogue editing: Is there no 'roll' trim in Audition & other questions...

Coming from NLE background, I'm editing a podcast in Audition.

I'm used to being able to edit dialogue very easily in Premiere Pro, and finding it less easy! Hoping this is just lack of knowledge.

I can use JKL to play and then mark in, mark out, and ripple delete between marks from keyboard. This is my go to basic trimming tool.

I can jump from edit to edit.

Is there a 'roll' trim mode? (i.e. where I have made a rough edit, timing is OK, I just want to move the edit point to a better place).

Seems like the 'nudge' commands only allow for ripple trims from the keyboard.

Is there a 'sync lock' for all tracks command? (i.e. all the tracks are synchronous and I don't want to put them out of sync). I can 'Group' the clips but then as soon as I edit them they stay in the same group and that might make trims tricky (but maybe not)

I can select clips to end, to start etc but cannot figure how to select clips under the playhead? (e.g. if I have razored a section I want to remove).

Or select clips in to out?

Is there a 'play around edit' command? (e.g. just jump back a few seconds and play)

    No there isn't a roll trim mode, and I think it would be a useful addition, although it would take a bit of thinking about if there's a crossfade at the trim point.

    You can lock a track in time - there's a right-click option when you have it selected. If you group clips, and lock the group but have one clip unlocked in it, you get what I think is a slightly anomalous situation where, if you try to grab the group from anywhere within it, just the unlocked clip moves. Generally not helpful...

    Just clicking on the bar at the top of a clip will select it, and hitting the 'Delete' key will remove it.

    Play around edit - yes. The tool on the far right of the transport controls (Skip Selection) will enable this.

    One thing you have to bear in mind about Audition is that it doesn't work in the same way that video NLEs do. This seems to confuse a lot of people who've come to it from video. Sometimes it can seem a bit 'kludgy', and there are certainly things about it that could be improved. Some things have even regressed; crossfade handling is one in particular that comes to mind... but most things can be achieved reasonably well, and a heck of a lot of editors actually prefer it for dialogue editing just as it is!

    I posted a feature request - Add roll trims like Premiere Pro – Adobe video & audio apps . I think they could pretty much incorporate it as it is in PPro - roll trims with transitions have the transitions come along for the ride.

    Might need a slightly different way of working as I see how the transitions are tied to a clip time and expand/contract as the edit is moved. Typically in video NLE's the transitions are a set duration and that moves with the edit - shrinking if the overall clip duration is shorter than the transition duration.

    Before we can go any further we just need to make sure that you are doing this editing in the Multitrack view? We assume that you are since you mention playhead across clips.
