Editing in Waveform has fully messed up my Multitrack, please help!

Hello, 

 

I'm currently working on editing an interview between a guest and a host. I have the files on two separate tracks because one guest's mic was picking up echo and was really bad, so I couldn't just use the synced session file (ugh.) 

 

ANYWAYS, I was working on cutting some tape down, and went into Waveform to cut it because I find it way easier to cut audio in Waveform than Multitrack. BUT when I came out of cutting, the Multitrack was now entirely out of sync—huge portions had gone missing in the guest track, and they had all become out of time within the host track. 

 

I tried to restore to a backup, but even older backups are now completely lost because they're still trying to pull their files from the now edited waveform. Is there any way I can undo what I've done so I can get everything back in line? I really don't want to go through and chop it all up again!

Will update my own stupidity: Turns out that the undos for the waveform and multitrack are separate, so once I went into the waveform and undid everything it's all back in its right place! Still, would appreciate any guidance on how to edit in waveform without mangling the multitrack session. Thanks!

The only way you can edit like this in Waveform view and keep both tracks in sync is to create a multichannel file out of copies* of what you've got, and cut that. I don't know anybody who actually does this though, because it's a bit of a pain to set up, although it's perfectly feasible. And you have to bear in mind that you have to unpack the file again if you are going to treat parts of it differently in Multitrack view. I suspect that by the time you've done all this, you'll wish you hadn't bothered. It's much, much easier just to put the raw materials in sync into Multitrack and edit across the tracks - none of the original material gets touched, so if you change your mind, you still have everything to go back to.

 

*Rule one of destructive editing: always edit a copy, not the original.
