error message about audio hardware

just installed Adobe Audition and I am getting an error message that reads "Audition has detected a problem with the current audio hardware settings". So what do I need to do? This error pops up when I try and record.

How on earth are we supposed to know? You haven't told us anything - not even if this is on a Mac or a PC!

 

We might be good, but miracles we cannot perform, I'm afraid. We need as much detail as you can provide about the hardware, and ideally a screen-grab of the Audio Hardware page in Preferences.
