Extracting an Envelope from an Audio Signal

Hi there -

I am curious if anyone knows how to extract a simple envelope from a complex audio signal in Adobe Audition.

Even though you can create a side-tone signal, you can only apply it to another instance of the Dynamics Processor. You can't extract it as an envelope on its own. So still no dice, I'm afraid.

I'm afraid that Audition doesn't have any tools for doing that. Even back in the slightly whackier days of Audition 3 it couldn't do it either. And it's not without its difficulties in terms of time constants, etc. Apparently it's possible to program Matlab to do it, but I don't know how effective it is, or how much effort that would be.
