File extension problem, can anyone help?

I have been using Audition and saving files as .wav, and also doing the 'save as' to save as mp3. When saving as mp3, the file name always used to end with .mp3, but recently it shows .wav and .mp3 as the options, and defaults to .wav. This means every time I save an mp3 file, I must type 'mp3' over where it defaults to .wav. This sudden change only happened after I upgraded a sound card. I looked at Windows file associations, but it doesn't help. How can I make Audition revert back to only saving mp3 files with an mp3 extension, and without defaulting to the .wav extension? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Next time you want to use Save As for saving an .mp3 file try typing in the complete name into the file name box complete with the file suffix ie. 'FileXXX.mp3' rather than letting Audition add the file type ending.

This problem usually comes about because a file name has been accidentally entered into the file name box complete with it's .wav extension. The above remedy should force Audition to go back to using .mp3 as the default when Saving As .mp3.

when saving a audio file from a wave file to a mp3, it still calls it a wav file, because some how the setting was changed to a wav. mp3, how do I get it back just to an mp3

Like it says above, what used to work when this happened (and hopefully still does) is, when you go to save as an MP3 you type the whole path including the extension into the save box. So that would, for instance, be mydodgyfile.mp3 rather than just mydodgyfile in the save box. It should then remember this. If you've carried this out correctly and it still comes out wrong, then report back.
