Gain problem

For some reason, when I record my microphone on Audition the audio peaks like crazy even though my mic's gain on my interface is set pretty low. any idea how to fix this?

My microphone is Audio Technica's AT4040 and my interface is a Scarlett 2i2. I also forgot to mention that this problem has never occurred to me before, but it started about a week ago.

Mac or a PC? Had any 'upgrades' run on it immediately prior to this? If it's on a PC, which driver are you using - MME or ASIO?
