Question

Hiss reduction

Are there some preferred settings that are ideal for his reduction from headset mic (Podcast) recordings? I am using the capture noise print, then applying the noise reduction/restoration (adaptive noise reduction) to the whole clip, but I can't seem to get good quality to come out of it. The hiss is reduced, but then the audio sounds very muffled and like there is distortion in the audio. Just wondering if there are some ideal settings or if I just keep playing with different combinations to get something that works well.

Thanks,

You are probably overdoing it. There are no 'recommended' settings, as all noise, and the quantity of it, is different. What there is though is a recommended procedure for doing it - and that's to take several passes at it, and use a different FFT setting each time. Don't take too much (4-5dB max) off each time, especially with the lower FFT settings, and expect a better result with higher FFT settings if it's mostly hiss you are trying to remove.

If you are using the latest CC 2017 version of Audition try looking at the Audition Learn feature from the help menu. There is a tutorial there for doing Noise Reduction which goes through all the steps outlined by Steve in more detail.
