How to Disable Ability to Record Over Existing Recording

I just recorded my first interview in Audition and thought everything went great until I went back to review and edit later and discovered that I somehow recorded over the second half of the interview by restarting a new recording over the existing recording. The first 7:38 is there just fine, but at that point a new recording of random studio noise starts. I must have somehow hit the record button later and made it start at the 7:38 point, essentially recording over the last half of my interview.

Is there any way to disable recording over an existing recording? So that I can't make this mistake again? I honestly have no idea how I moved the playhead to the 7:38 mark (maybe I was reviewing the track?) and then started recording over it. I remember clicking off the "R" (Arm for Record) button on each track, but I must have somehow actually started a new recording rather than disabling new recordings.

Is there any chance my original recording is saved anywhere or does recording over it completely wipe the original file? I checked the .wav files and it consists of the first 7:38 of the interview in one .wav followed by a separate 30 min .wav of the accidental recording. It looks like the second half of the interview was just wiped.

Thanks ryclark, that's how I was hoping it would work, but I seem to have done something to stop all the 001.wav files at 7:38. They all just cut out at exactly the point where the next recording starts over them in the Multiview.

Does that mean that I somehow stopped the recording manually at that point?

Ok, wow, I just reviewed the video recording and I can see my watch touch my mousepad on my MacBook Pro at exactly the point where the recording stops. It looks like I must have left the mouse hovering over the record button and tapped it again at that point inadvertently.

Wow, glad to hear I've got the software setup right I just gotta move my damn mouse off that record button to avoid this happening again!

Thanks for the insight, it's good to know I can't do this by mistake again as long as I don't stop the recording randomly by mistake haha.

Oh dear. That was very bad luck.

If this was done in the Multitrack view, I presume it was as you mention Record enabling a track, then you won't have lost anything since everything done there is non destructive. All recording is done direct to disc so all the audio files should still be in your session Recorded folder. The original part of the recorded file will still be there under the new recording. You should be able just select and delete the unwanted over recorded part.
