Question

Isolate Vocals without Central Channel Extractor

I've been trying to separate vocals and music from a song. The problem is that for this song, both the vocals and the music are contained in the side channels, making it very difficult to isolate either. Is there another method that I can use?

I'm afraid that there isn't really any other method of doing this. Audition's Center Channel Extractor is the equal of any on the market, and as good or better than any others I've heard, but it can't cope with isolating a vocal when there's other stuff in the same spatial position; none of them can. And the process is never perfect anyway; if reverb is used on the vocal, usually this remains either side of it as a 'ghostly' voice, and there's absolutely no way of getting rid of that.

What they claim that they can do with sound isolation on CSI doesn't work at all in the real world!

That blows. I'll see if any other applications work, then.

    I'm afraid it won't.
