I thought there was a way to have an effect open, apply it to the current selection and then have it stay in the effect rack only disabled. Is that only available on multitrack mode? Thanks.

Yes, multitrack only. You couldn't do this in waveform because it operates on having a succession of temp files which store the results of your changes, rather than the settings you used. You can set that number of temp files in Settings, but if you are working on large files, the temp space can fill up quickly so you might want to limit the number of Undos (I have it set to 5). A multitrack session file, though, saves everything to do with the session and how it's set up at the time of the save.
