Question

Levels are reading high, but the output volume is incredibly low.

I have made a simple recording. In audition, the levels are reading high, near clipping infact. Yet the playback volume output is extremely low. Hardly audible. It is not the speaker setting as every other sound in other programs, apps, websites, are outputing normal volume.

What is causing the low output in sound, even though the recording wavform is reading high?

Could be one of several things, and I'm assuming a Windows machine. If you are recording in Multitrack, then you need to make sure that the Master fader is up. If you are recording in Waveform view, then it is likely that in fact it is a system setting - if you right-click on the speaker icon and select Open Volume Mixer, you'll find that Audition gets a slider of its own, and you may have to advance that. This fader also affects the Multitrack volume, incidentally. Apart from the Master fader setting for multitrack, Audition doesn't have any means of regulating the output volume - that's purely a sound device issue.
