Question

Markers - Affect effects for all the marked sections or between, at once ?

Hi there,

I hope my twisted french mind won't make my explainations impossible to understand, so!

I have a looooong Interview recorded in a noisy place. Subjects had lavalier mikes so the result is audible

I used Auditions's noise reductions processes to lower that background, but I tend not to push the reduction as I dislike the artificial result, it deteriorates the overall signal too much (I might not use it well either)

Then, my strategy would be to lower the background volume between the journalist an interviewee's speech, so I marked all my speech sections.

Now, Id like to lower the volume on all the sections which are NOT marked at once.

Maybe I can swap marked and unmarked sections and affect a volume reduction on all the Marked sections at once, don't know.. I cant even select all the marked sections to cut them somwhere, (I need to keep the spacing between em so Im not interested by the 'export marked clippets' command)

It'd be rational for  me to be able to do so, but I didn't find any ay to select all the marked sections.

Any Ideas ? It'd be really helpful and time saving.

Thanks for your attention and take care!
B

I don't think you can do that easily with the markers, but I can tell you how to get the best out of NR - and it's not really obvious:

The first thing you do is set the FFT size to the maximum (16384), and then take a noise sample. The trick at this point is not to attempt to take very much noise out - just set the Noise Reduction slider to about 70% and importantly, the Reduce By slider to no more than 4dB, and do a pass like that. Then go back to the start and do this again, only this time set the FFT size to 4096, resample the noise, and use the same settings - possibly reducing the noise by only 3dB. Then do it a third time, with the FFT set to 1024 and definitely don't take more than 3dB off. Yes you have to resample the noise each time, because the noise profile changes at each step.

What you should find is that you've achieved a reasonable level of NR without the artifacts. I know that sounds like a bit of a pain, but almost always the results are worth it. The higher the FFT number, the less bubbling noises you get, but this won't do too much for LF noise - that's where the lower settings make the noise window wider, coping with longer wavelengths.

Hello Steve, and thanks for your siggestion! It actully helped as Im not a pro of this noise reduction process.

I tried your solution, and I definitely hear an improvement, althoug I think It might work better on a backsound that would be more of a parasite, than my noises which are people talking. It helped thoug thakks for that, and it taught me something, which is also great. So far I just did the overall process once, I wonder if I do it again. Gonna try that and will let you know. Best !
