Match Volume

Question

I am currently compiling audio CDR's of chart music new and old. I have been using Nero to burn the discs and have been using the Nero "Normalise" function. A problem I have come up against is where a particular track has no drumming for example which makes it quieter then the other tracks which have drumming the volume of the song without drummer gets booster to the point of distortion. In Adobe Audition CS6 which I have there is a function called "Match Volume", would this be better for me?

Yes it should be better if you use one of the Loudness presets since they take some account of the content of the audio. If you use Match Volume from the Effects menu you can either drag and drop or open files into the Batch pane and do loads of them in one go. However you may have to experiment a bit with which preset to use and some of the settings.

'Normalise' isn't a good function to use in this case as you have found since it just looks for the loudest peak in each file and therefore brings up the level of the quieter ones much too much in comparison with more peaky type of content.
