Mic settings issues

Hi, I've got two questions/issues with my Audio Hardware settings.

 

1. In both the Default Input and Default Output dropdown menus I've got TWO options for my Yeti Pro mic:

- System Default - Microphone (2-Blue USB Audio 2.0)

- Microphone (2-Blue USB Audio 2.0)

Why are there these two options which are for the same mic?

Which one should I select?  Does it matter?

 

2.  When I first installed Audition (about 2 months ago), my mic sample rate was 48000 Hz, which was reflected in my Audition settings.  Then at some point, possibly (?) after the recent Audition update, I noticed that the sample rate has changed to 44100 Hz.  My mic stopped working (was not recognised as working in Audition), and when I ran Windows sound troubleshooter, it said that the sample rate was "different from the default", and after changing it back to 44100 Hz in the mic settings, it was working again.

 

I want to change it back to 48000 Hz as  that's the recommended sample rate for this mic. However, this is a mystery as:

- I can't changed the sample rate in Audition settings - it is grayed out and inactive.

- I  have the option:  "Use Machine Specific device defaults" selected

So - Audition should read and accept my mic sample rate of 48000 Hz - why doesn't it?

Is this some sort of change in the recent update?  How can I fix this sample rate mismatch to 48000 Hz?

 

This was working until...it didn't.

I'm going to assume that this is a PC, not a Mac...

 

There's something slightly weird going on with settings; I'm not entirely surprised that you are confused, because things don't seem to be doing what they are supposed to be, quite frankly. Fortunately there's a fairly simple way of getting the default mic settings back to 48k, and that's to click on the 'settings' button in Audio Hardware, which opens the Windows Sound panel. Click on Recording, and the active device and then at the bottom select Properties. In the new box that opens, click on Advanced. If you now click on Restore Defaults, it will automatically change to 2 channel, 16 bit 48000 Hz (DVD quality). If for any reason it doesn't, then you can select this from the dropdown anyway. At this point just Okay everything, and you should be good to go.

 

When you've done all of this, you should select the System Default mic. I don't think it matters which you actually select, but it's definitely the System Default you just set the sample rate for, so go with that. I think that will work fine, but you can always try the other if it doesn't, can't you?

yes it is a PC.

 

As I said (perhaps not very clearly 🙂 , that's exactly what I did - changed the sample rate in the mic settings.

But then, Audition did not see the mic at all, showing me messages about the MME error and that this mic is " not working".  To fix the error, I ran Windows troubleshooter which said the issue was a frequency rate mismatch with the default.  It fixed the issue by reverting the sample rate of the mic to 44100 Hz.

 

So this points to a glitch in Audition which has fixed its default to 44100 Hz and so 48000 Hz is a mismatch and the mic doesn't work. Especially that this setting is fixed with no edit option.

 

I can still set my projects at 48000 Hz, so the issue is to get the optimal settings for my mic which is 48000.

 

I can try to untick Use machine-specific device default, (perhaps the issue is with my machine i.e Windows) but this will restart Audition and may affect the current project so will wait until I finish it.

There is one other thing you can try, which is to use the ASIO4ALL driver. It is free, and also has some diagnostic tools in it. This has been known to help before...
