Pardon this nubie questions - Im on a Mac MiniM2, Behringer UMC204HD USB interface, Samsung large diaphram Mic, recording short segments of voice to audition. When I play back the track I am still hearing room noise via my live microphone. I can turn off the phantom power on the back of the Behringer USB interphase (to cut the mic), but on the UMC204HD the phamtom power is on a mechanical switchs in the back of the unit and seems crazy to be reaching back there every time I want to check a recording  - there must be a better solution.

Your UMC204HD has a 'mix' knob on the front of it. It sounds as though you haven't got it turned fully to the 'PB' (PlayBack) end. If you do that, you should only hear the playback, and not the ambient sound from the mic, which is still effectively in the monitor path. That's what the 'IN' stands for - INput. Doing that should let you hear the recording cleanly, without the need for switching anything.

Hey Steve, thank you. Someday I should get a formal audio education and Ill know these silly things. Hope to retire in a few years from my day job and maybe that will be the time to learn.  Even as a hacker, setting up a basic studio with the equipment above has made a world of difference - can't wait until I actually know what Im doing
