Question

Multi-channel mapping to one channel?

im using a zedi10FX board to do podcasting with Audition on a mac book pro. It records each mic on a separate channel. I know how to assign each mic to a channel in audition.

Problem is im getting som popping, i think because recording 3-4 channels at once is a bit much for my laptop?

So I want to know if there is a way to map all the mics to one channel in audition? or at least 2 mics per channel? Or if this even sounds like it will help my problem.

thanks in advance!

You could use the mixer (aka 'board') to pan all four mics across a stereo field and record the stereo output, but whether that would actually make it easier to edit, I'm not so sure - depends on your podcast. If that's fine, then it's simply a matter of panning the mics appropriately, and recording the main output of the mixer in stereo. But...

I suspect that isn't likely to be the cause of your problems, as most modern laptops would record four streams at once without batting an eyelid. To find out what's going on, we'd need to know rather more about your laptop, and also when you notice this 'popping'. Even better, post a sample of it somewhere like Dropbox, and provide a link to it. It may well be a lot easier to work out what's really happening this way.

I have to agree with Steve that any modern computer can handle 4 tracks.  My five year old Windows machine can do 32+ channels.  Recording isn't a big overhead for a computer.  I'm curious though how you're getting 4 tracks.  As far as I know the Zed 10FX can only provide 2 tracks at a time via USB,  Could there be something funny in your mixer.  (And, by the way, it would be an easy matter to send a single stereo or even mono channel from your mixer to Audition.  That's the place you'd make the adjustment you asked about.

Two things to have a look at:

First, check under Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware and make the latency/buffer size a bit larger.

Second, also under Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware, check what's set as your Master Clock...and that whatever is generating your clock is outputting a proper sync signal matching the settings you've created in Audition for your recording.

...and if neither of those help, I'll second Steve's suggestion about posting a sample.
